Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 August 2026
This privacy policy explains how Sevenko Apps (“we”, “us”, “our”) handles personal information in the Checkpoint Watch mobile app for Android (the “App”) and the website at checkpoint.sevenkoapps.store (the “Site”).
By using the App or Site you agree to the collection and use of information described in this policy.
1. Who we are
Sevenko Apps is a small New Zealand app studio. The App is a community road-safety tool that lets users report, and be alerted to, police checkpoints, RBT/booze buses, speed cameras (radar), and road hazards around Aotearoa. It is a driver-safety app: user privacy and safety data are treated as sensitive and protected accordingly.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide directly
- Checkpoint reports — the type (police / RBT / radar / hazard / NZTA), the location pin you place, and any optional description you type when you submit a report.
- Account details — if you register, a username and password (stored as a one-way scrypt hash; never stored in plain text). We do not collect your real name or email address as part of an account.
- Flags / reports — if you report an existing checkpoint as wrong or absent, the reason and optional notes you provide.
Information collected automatically
- Device identifier — a stable, non-identifying device ID (derived from Android's ANDROID_ID, or a generated UUID) used to identify your device, manage your integrity score, and fight abuse.
- Location — see Section 3. The App requests location permission to place checkpoint pins accurately and to power geofence alerts.
- Push-notification token (FCM) — a unique device token used by Google Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver the alerts you have enabled (e.g. nearby checkpoint notifications and update notices).
- Device & app data — device model, manufacturer, Android OS version, app version, and crash reports. Used to keep the App stable and to improve it.
- Usage telemetry — a lightweight report of device state, permission status, the screen you are on, the app's foreground/background state, and your last-known GPS position (when available). This is sent to our admin system so we can see which devices have the App installed and operating correctly. It does not include messages, contacts, or other personal content.
- IP address — derived automatically by our server from the network request (for security and abuse prevention).
3. Location data
Checkpoint Watch is a location-based safety app, and some features rely on your location:
- Placing a report — when you submit a checkpoint, the report stores the co-ordinates of the pin you place. This is the location of the checkpoint, not necessarily your live position.
- Background location / geofence alerts — if you grant background (“all the time”) location permission, the App may use geofencing to wake itself and alert you when you are near an active checkpoint. This is opt-in; you can change or revoke permission at any time in your device settings.
- Last-known location (telemetry) — for operational visibility, the App sends its last-known GPS fix alongside device telemetry. This helps us confirm the App is working and detect issues.
You are always in control. Location is opt-in and requested through the standard Android permission prompts (foreground, and separately background). You can stop sharing location at any time in your device settings, and the App keeps working for manual, non-location features. We do not sell your location data.
4. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate and provide the App and its safety features.
- Deliver push alerts to the devices that have enabled them.
- Securely authenticate your account and maintain your integrity score.
- Detect and prevent abuse, spam, and fake or bad reports.
- Diagnose crashes and improve performance and reliability.
- Respond to your requests and support enquiries.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your location or checkpoint data for purposes other than operating the App and its safety features.
5. Advertising
No advertising. The App does not display any advertising. We do not use advertising networks, and we do not serve ads of any format (banner, interstitial, native, or app-open). Your location, checkpoint reports, and other data are never used for advertising.
6. Analytics and crash reporting
The App uses Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how the App is used and to fix crashes. These tools process device and app-usage data (not checkpoint content or location) under Google's privacy terms. The Site uses Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly, cookie-free analytics service — it does not identify individual visitors.
7. How we share your information
We share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- With service providers — trusted third parties that process data on our behalf, including Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging, Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics), Mapbox (map rendering), and OpenStreetMap Nominatim (converting a report's co-ordinates into a suburb name for push alerts). They are bound by contract to protect your data and may use it only to provide services to us.
- As required by law — if we are required to do so by New Zealand or other applicable law, regulation, or a valid legal request, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of our users, the public, or Sevenko Apps.
8. Where your data is stored & retention
- Storage location — our own application database (checkpoint reports, accounts, integrity, telemetry) is hosted on our servers in New Zealand. Some third-party services (Firebase, Mapbox) are operated by overseas providers (including Google in the United States), so limited data may be stored or processed offshore under those providers' terms.
- Retention — active checkpoint reports expire from the public map after a short period (about 1 hour). Your account, integrity record, and telemetry are kept while your account is active and for as long as needed for abuse prevention and legal compliance. You can delete your account and the associated data at any time — see Section 10.
- Security — we use industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit (TLS) and hashed/salted passwords, to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information and to respond to any breach promptly.
9. Children's privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The App is a road-safety tool intended for drivers and passengers. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Your rights & choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your data / request erasure (including deleting your account in the App).
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Withdraw consent for location sharing or any consent-based processing at any time.
New Zealand users have rights under the Privacy Act 2020. If you have a concern, contact us and we will respond promptly. You also have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the App and update the “Last updated” date at the top. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
